A CEO at a crossroads

The Situation

Successful, certain of nothing.

The CEO of a mid-sized professional services firm had, by every external measure, succeeded. The business was performing strongly. The team was loyal. The board was supportive. And yet she found herself, at 52, deeply uncertain about whether to continue.

A potential acquisition offer had surfaced — significant financially, but requiring her to stay in post for three more years in a substantially changed role. At the same time, she was aware of a growing desire to do something different — something she couldn't yet name clearly.

She was not in crisis. She was at a genuine crossroads, with real options and real stakes, and she needed a space to think that was completely free of organisational agenda.

Everyone around me had a view on what I should do. I needed someone who had no agenda at all.
The Approach

A confidential space to think clearly.

Over eight months of one-to-one coaching, the work moved through three phases. The first was decompression — creating enough space to hear her own thinking beneath the noise of others' expectations, financial logic, and status quo inertia.

The second phase explored values and motivation at depth. Not the values she would articulate publicly, but the ones that actually drove her sense of meaning and aliveness at work. This surfaced a significant tension between what she had built her career on and what she was now beginning to want from it.

The third phase was decision-making — not being told what to decide, but being supported to reach a decision that was genuinely hers and that she could stand behind regardless of outcome.

  • Fortnightly coaching sessions — consistent, confidential, agenda-free
  • Values and motivation deep-dive (sessions 3–5)
  • Scenario mapping and consequence exploration
  • Stakeholder relationship analysis (without disclosure)
  • Decision integration — testing the choice before committing
The Outcome

A decision made — and owned.

She declined the acquisition offer and announced her intention to step down from the CEO role within twelve months — on her own terms, with a successor she had identified and begun developing.

She went on to establish an independent advisory practice, working with three clients in the first six months at a pace and depth that felt genuinely satisfying rather than merely productive.

She described the coaching engagement not as having been given a direction, but as having found it — and the difference, she noted, was everything. The decision has held. She has not looked back.

I didn't need someone to tell me what to do. I needed someone to help me hear what I already knew. That's what happened.
